Overview

Allergies are very common, especially among children. While around 40% of children will experience allergic reactions, many of them will grow out of allergies.

Allergic reactions can vary dramatically in terms of severity. They can cause a mild itch or potentially fatal anaphylactic shock.

Most allergies caused mild symptoms. While these aren’t life changing, they can be troublesome and should be managed effectively. The most common symptoms of allergic reactions in children are:

  • Sneezing or a blocked nose
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Rash
  • Swelling of the lips or tongue
  • Stomach pain or sickness
  • Dry skin
  • Wheezing or a cough

There is some evidence that the prevalence of allergies - particularly food allergies - is increasing.

What causes allergies in children?

Children have immature immune systems, which are developing as they become exposed to viruses and bacteria. As the immune system develops, it can make mistakes, identifying a non-harmful substance as something attacking the body.

When this happens, the body releases histamines, which can bind to receptors in the body, causing the various allergic reactions. Depending on the substance causing the reaction and the part of the body affected, allergens can cause many different symptoms.

Hay fever, which is a reaction to pollen, is one of the most common reactions. It is most prevalent in Spring and Summer, when the pollen count is highest.

There are many ways to treat children experiencing allergic reactions. Many antihistamines are available. These work by blocking the effects of histamine, and reduce the allergy symptoms.
