Diabetes is a very serious condition where the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood become too high. This is often a chronic condition that needs to be managed throughout a patient's life. There are two types of diabetes that you can be diagnosed with:
- Type 1 diabetes: the body can’t make insulin at all
- Type 2 diabetes: the body doesn’ produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin
Both types have similar symptoms and can lead to serious complications so if you develop any of the symptoms then you should talk to your GP about getting tested. These symptoms are:
- Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night
- Being really thirsty
- Feeling more tired than usual
- Losing weight without trying to
- Genital itching or thrush
- Cuts and wounds take longer to heal
- Blurred vision
Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly over weeks or even days so is easier to detect as these changes are prominent. However type 2 diabetes can go undiagnosed for years as the early symptoms tend to be general, in fact some people have gone up to 10 years before being diagnosed.
Complications of diabetes can lead to serious damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys, and even feet due to high sugar levels. This can happen after long-term mismanagement of the condition.
At Rightdose we supply glucose test strips, lancets, and needles to help you manage your blood glucose levels so that you can keep diabetes under control.
Type 2 diabetes can be helped by improving diet and exercise along with losing weight if overweight and can even go into remission. However type 1 diabetes can only be managed as the body is no longer able to produce insulin.
