What causes earache?

Earache can be a sharp, dull or burning pain in one or both ears - and it can come and go or be constant.

It is a common problem, particularly in children.

Earache is often caused by an infection, but it can sometimes happen as the result of injury to the inside of the ear – with poking a cotton bud in too far a common issue.

Earache will often clear up after just a few days, but it can be quite painful.
