What causes arthritis pain?
Arthritis is a common condition, affecting around 101 million people in the UK. While it mainly affects older people, people of any age, including children, can suffer from arthritis.
Arthritis causes pain and inflammation in the joints. This can affect mobility.
There are many types of arthritis and related conditions. The most common symptoms are:
- Joint pain and stiffness
- Inflammation around the joints
- Restricted movement of the joints
- Warm, red skin over the joint
- Weakness and muscle wastage
Many common painkillers can help soothe the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
Types of arthritis
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. This affects about 9 million people in the UK.
Osteoarthritis affects the smooth cartilage of the joint. This makes movement more difficult. It also means the tendons have to work harder. This can lead to pain and stiffness in the joint.
This most commonly affects the hands, spine, knees and hips.
Rheumatoid arthritis affects around 400,000 people in the UK. This is caused by the body’s immune system, which begins to target joints. This causes pain and swelling in the joint.
Soothing arthritis pain
Many anti-inflammatory painkillers can help soothe the pain or arthritis. These include:
- Voltarol gel
