What is the flu?

Flu or influenza is a common infectious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes, which can be very unpleasant. It is often more severe than a cold and lasts longer.

Flu is caused by a group of viruses and it often leaves people feeling exhausted and so unwell they have to stay in bed.

Symptoms of the flu

Symptoms of the flu include:

• Fever 
• Tiredness and weakness
• Headaches
• General aches and pains
• A dry, chesty cough

Treatments

The flu virus is spread when someone who is infected coughs or sneezes. Everyday items at home and in public places can easily become contaminated with the flu virus. You should stay at home, keep warm and drink plenty of water.
