What is indigestion?

Indigestion is pain or discomfort which can take the form of heartburn.

The pain or discomfort can be felt in your upper abdomen – dyspepsia – or behind the breastbone – heartburn.

Indigestion is usually related to eating, with stomach acid coming into contact with the sensitive lining of the digestive system, causing irritation and inflammation.

Symptoms of indigestion

Symptoms of indigestion include:

• Feeling bloated
• Nausea
• Belching
• Bringing up fluid or food into the gullet

Indigestion can usually be treated at home and simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can make a difference.
