Nits, lice & worms
When children go nursery or school, it’s highly likely they will get head lice or nits at some point. It’s not caused by having unclean hair. Head lice are picked up through close contact, which is basically inevitable when your kids are in school.
When you spot lice, it’s important they are treated as quickly as possible. After all, it’s easy for lice to get passed on from your children to you and the rest of your family.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to spot head lice, which tend to hide in the hair. Using a fine tooth comb can help remove head lice, although you may be more likely to sport nits - the eggs head lice lay.
Treating head lice
If you spot head lice on your child’s head, they should be treated as soon as possible. You should also check anyone else in the home for head lice, and treat them if lice are found. You may want to inform your child’s school, as they will be able to tell other parents to check for lice.
You should first attempt wet combing the hair. Simply wash the hair using your usual shampoo, put in plenty of conditioner and then comb the hair from root to tip. This should remove most head lice and nits.
If they are a bit more stubborn, you can use solutions that kill lice and nits. These can either be sprayed on the hair and left in overnight, or you may want fast acting solutions that can be washed out after five minutes.
Generally, you should use the solution again after a week, to get rid of any lice that have hatched since the first application.
