Overview

Haemorrhoids (sometimes called piles) are lumps that are found inside and around the anus (the opening in your bottom). These can often go away after a few days however there are over-the-counter treatment options that can help you manage symptoms. The majority of haemorrhoid cases are self diagnosed and symptoms can include:

  • bright red blood after you poo
  • an itchy anus
  • feeling like you still need to poo after going to the toilet
  • slimy mucus in your underwear or on toilet paper after wiping your bottom
  • lumps around your anus
  • pain around your anus

As well as suppositories, ointments, gels, or creams, from Rightdose Pharmacy to ease any pain, itching, or swelling, there are lifestyle changes you can adopt to help with treatment and prevention:

  • Drink lots of fluid and eat plenty of fibre to keep your poo soft while cutting down on alcohol and caffeine
  • Wipe your bottom with damp toilet paper and wipe gently
  • Take paracetamol if piles hurt, do not take ibuprofen if your piles are bleeding, and don't take codeine at all as it can cause constipation
  • Take a warm bath to ease itching and pain or use an ice pack wrapped in a towel to ease discomfort
  • Keep your bottom clean and dry
  • Exercise regularly
  • Do not ignore the urge to poo and do not push too hard when pooing

If there is no improvement after 7 days of treatment at home or you keep getting piles, then you should see a GP who may prescribe stronger treatments.
