FAQ

Which cleanser is right for you?

Follow CeraVe's simple guide to choosing a cleanser suited to your skin type and concerns.

Cleansing should be the first step in your skincare routine, used to remove makeup, impurities and debris from the pores. The type of cleanser you use is crucial to getting this step right, and over-stripping the skin with ingredients that are too harsh or drying can damage the skin’s protective barrier - and actually create skin concerns rather than solving them.

To help you find the right cleanser for you, we’ve created a simple guide that explains the four main skin types and the formulas that work best to care for your skin.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser - Best for: Normal to dry skin

Normal to dry skin types need a cleanser that is both hydrating and gentle, such as CeraVe’s Hydrating Cleanser. This soothing cleanser is specifically formulated for sensitive facial skin that is prone to irritation and even eczema. As with all CeraVe formulas, it contains three essential ceramides to help protect the natural skin barrier (responsible for blocking harmful irritants) and hyaluronic acid to attract and retain moisture on the skin. Use it every morning and evening and follow with your usual serum and moisturiser.

CeraVe Smoothing Cleanser - Best for: Rough and bumpy skin and Keratosis Pilaris (a very common harmless condition where small bumps appear on your skin. It can last for a long time, but there are treatments that may improve your skin.

If you have rough bumpy skin on your face and body, you may need a cleanser that hydrates and exfoliates at the same time. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser does this with a formula enriched with exfoliating salicylic acid, three essential ceramides and hydrating hyaluronic acid. When used each morning and evening, this cleanser gently removes oil, dirt and makeup from the skin and can also be used on skin suffering from Keratosis Pilaris.

CeraVe Cream to Foam Cleanser - Best for: Dry skin

If you have a dry skin type, you need a cleanser that doesn’t strip or damage the skin. One of the latest innovations is CeraVe’s cream-to-foam cleanser that is formulated to effectively remove makeup, oils, and dirts but without leaving the face feeling tight. It does this with an efficacious formula that features an amino-acid surfactant to remove dirt and oil alongside a powerful combination of amino acids, hyaluronic acid and three essential ceramides that attract and retain water on the skin and protect the skin’s natural barrier.

Foaming Cleanser- Best for: Combination and oily skin types

Combination skin types are more prone to discomfort and imperfections so require a cleanser that soaks up oil without drying the skin out. CeraVe’s Foaming Cleanser is recommended by dermatologists due to the way it gently cleanses sensitive skin with a refreshing foam action and calms the skin with the B3 vitamin, niacinamide. This foaming action negates the need for double cleansing which can actually damage the barrier function and cause redness, irritation and dryness.

CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Foaming Oil Cleanser - Best for: Normal to Very Dry Skin (Also for Baby & Atopic-Prone Skin)

Cleanses, hydrates and soothes the skin without disrupting the skin barrier.

Use the chosen CeraVe cleanser every morning and evening, and pair with CeraVe’s Serums to lift your skin and AM and PM Facial Moisturising Lotion to hydrate your skin all day long.

Ingredients that can help to reduce the appearance of blemishes

Whether blemishes are a regular occurrence for you, or just something you experience every once in a while, it’s helpful to know how to tackle them quickly and effectively.

Read on to find out which ingredients can help to reduce blemishes and how to introduce them into your skincare routine.

BHA Skincare: What are BHAs?

BHAs, or Beta-Hydroxy Acids as they’re officially known, are ingredients that have the ability to cut through the bonds that allow dead skin and debris to sit on the surface, clogging the pores. While very effective, these exfoliating acids actually do their part of shedding dead skin very gently – so gently in fact, that your skin shouldn’t experience any irritation or sensitivity as a result of using a product such as a BHA cleanser.

One of the most common BHAs that you’ll find in skincare formulas is Salicylic Acid. When used regularly in a cleanser or moisturiser, Salicylic Acid can help to reduce the look of these blemishes and improve the appearance of pre-existing problem areas (ideal for those dark marks left behind after a breakout).

That’s why you’ll find it in the ingredients list of one of our award-winning products, the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser.

Niacinamide in Skincare

“Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has soothing effects and works synergistically with ceramides to help strengthen the skin barrier.” - Dr. Alexis Granite.

Due to its soothing properties, Niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for blemish-prone skin. This means that not only does it help to calm the skin, but it can also help to control the amount of oil produced in the pores.

You’ll find Niacinamide in many of our formulas including CeraVe’s Micellar Cleansing Water and SA Smoothing Cream.

LHA for Skin

LHAs (Lipo-Hydroxy Acids) have many benefits to blemish-prone skin including accelerating skin-cell renewal and tightening the pores. This means they can help to reduce the appearance of blemishes and blackheads by decreasing the look of the size of the pores and stopping the skin from producing excess oil.

But the benefits don’t stop there. LHAs are also soothing and can help reduce redness in the skin while also being non-comedogenic – so they won’t block the pores further.

You’ll find LHA in our gently exfoliating SA Smoothing Cream that can be used in areas prone to blemishes and roughness. For best results, use it alongside CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser.
