INNOVATIVE RESEARCH

The Ourika Gardens in Morocco have become a source of inspiration for the creation of makeup, skincare & fragrances. By creating and supporting gardens for growing botanicals, with a space entirely dedicated to botanical research, YSL Beauté has adopted an innovative approach.

In the untouched landscape of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains lies the exceptional Ourika Gardens where YSL Beauty have supported the creation of an inclusive women’s cooperative. This cooperative relies on the expertise of local women to care for the gardens and harvest botanical ingredients to better understand them and use them in selected YSL signature products. Through the Ourika Gardens, YSL Beauty proudly promotes the unique skills of these local communities and has helped support their financial independence since 2012.

In these gardens, irises, prickly pears, marigold, walnut trees, verbena all thrive alongside precious saffron.

The unique microclimate, shielded by mountains, with scorching summers and cold winters, provides optimal growing conditions for vegetation.

This long-term project, directly inspired by permaculture, brings together all the advantages of a virtuous and quality production: plants which grow as the seasons unfold, using sustainable agricultural practices.

The gardens are divided into three distinct areas. The first is composed of 64 square plots for growing plants where botanical ingredients are harvested to be incorporated in selected YSL signature products. In addition to the saffron pistils extract used in the Or Rouge skincare range, you can find walnut leaf extract (used in our Top Secrets setting spray), marigold extract (used in our signature product Touche Éclat), and many more. A second space called the “botanical area” is an experimental area for exploring and understanding new ingredients. Finally, a “legacy” space pays tribute to Yves Saint Laurent and his passion for flowers, with clusters of hibiscus, wheat, and lilies.

The audacities that have since been mine, I owe them to this country, to the violence of the agreements, to the insolence of the mixtures, to the ardour of the inventions. Yves Saint Laurent discovered Morocco in 1966, at the age of 33. It was a revelation: he fell in love with the light bathed country, its vibrant colours and its way of life so different to the Parisian bustle. The effect was so powerful, he instantly knew that this country would be his refuge, his paradise and an inexhaustible source of inspiration as it had been for artists like Delacroix and Matisse. To him, Morocco was more than a travel destination: after that first trip, assisted by Pierre Bergé , he bought a house and turned the sublime Majorelle Gardens into a haven of sheer happiness . It became his creative retreat, a place that inspired his innovative ideas and bold use of colour.

THE PROJECT

The love story between Yves Saint Laurent and Morocco continues to the Ourika Valley at the gates of the Atlas Mountains, some thirty kilometres from the buzz of Marrakech. What used to be a wasteland has been transformed into a botanical garden. In addition to creating job opportunities for a cooperative of women, these gardens allow YSL Beauté to harvest some of the precious ingredients used in the YSL Beauté creation.

Fragrance Concentration

Perfumes, whether for men or women, contain a fragrance concentrate (essential oils) diluted in a mixture of alcohol and water. In reality, the fragrance concentration percentage and its level of alcohol influence how long the scent lasts, and determine its category. There are four types of perfume with specific characteristics:

Eau de Cologne

This is the lightest, least persistent type of perfume. Its concentration varies from 2% to 5%. The product is fresh, invigorating and associated with a concept of cleanliness and freshness.

Eau de Toilette (EDT)

One of the most popular types of perfume, eau de toilette is perfect for regular, everyday use. Its concentration varies from 5% to 12%. The top notes make up half the fragrance. The perfumer places emphasis on the freshness and unfurling of the fragrance.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

Sometimes called parfum de toilette or esprit de parfum, its concentration varies from 12% to 20%. Eau de parfum is long-lasting and remains for 5 to 10 hours. The middle notes make up most of the fragrance. The perfumer highlights these notes to enhance the perfume’s sparkle. More concentrated than eau de toilette, eau de parfum is generally more tenacious and leaves a stronger scent trail.

Perfume

Also known as extrait de parfum, this is the most concentrated product. Its concentration varies from 20% to 40% in an extra-fine alcohol solution of 96%. This fragrance lasts longer than other types and is generally reserved for special occasions, especially for the evening and night. Base notes make up most of the fragrance. The perfumer places emphasis on the noble quality of the base notes to reinforce its tenaciousness and volume. A few drops of perfume applied directly to the skin, preferably on the pulse points, are sufficient to reveal its trail and intensity.

How to use:

Spritz onto the pulse points (neck, wrists & behind the ears) to unleash the scent.

External use only.
