FAQ

HOW TO TREAT DIFFERENT TYPES OF DANDRUFF?

Peptides and vitamin C are two ingredients creating quite a buzz in the world of skincare, credited for helping to brighten and bring radiance to the skin – not to mention improve the appearance of ageing signs. So, to help you become better acquainted with these active ingredients and decide if your routine needs them in it, we’ve written a bluffer’s guide bursting with facts about these powerful skin heroes.

What’s the difference between dry and oily dandruff?

Dry dandruff

Dry dandruff is characterised by its flaky texture and fine, white (or grey) particles. They brush off easily onto the shoulders when the head is scratched or brushed. This type of dandruff can usually be treated with specialist shampoos which aim to relieve and moisturise dry or itchy scalps.

Oily dandruff

Greasy or adherent dandruff is different from dry dandruff in that it is caused by excess sebum production. This excess sebum reacts with a yeast present in the skin known as malassezia, resulting in thick, greasy flakes that stick to the scalp and are difficult to remove, even after shampooing. This type of dandruff is therefore thicker, stickier and more oily, with flakes accumulating on top of each other, forming a greasy covering. What’s more, this type of dandruff is generally recurring since sebum promotes the development of malassezia yeast, creating a vicious circle. As well as specialist dandruff shampoos developed for oily hair, scalp exfoliation can also help alleviate adherent dandruff.

How to treat different types of dandruff?

While signs of dry dandruff can usually be alleviated with a targeted shampoo such as Vichy Dercos Anti-Dandruff Advanced Action Shampoo for Itchy Scalp, oily dandruff - also known as adherent dandruff - tends to stick to the scalp, making removal difficult. Opting for a scrub-based treatment, rather than a traditional shampoo can help remove the trickiest flakes. Meanwhile, look for naturally exfoliating ingredients, such as salicylic acid (present in many anti-acne treatments) to help beat greasy dandruff long-term. Hydrating ingredients such as glycerin can help soothe irritation, so look for a formula that’s both gentle and effective. Vichy Dercos Micropeel Shampoo, which has been specially developed for sensitive oily scalps is enriched with Salicylic acid, LHA and apricot seed and aids exfoliation, soothes the scalp and leaves the hair looking conditioned.

So once you’ve identified the type of dandruff you have, ensure you find the right treatments and use these regularly to ensure hair and scalp stay perfectly healthy and look in peak condition with no more embarrassing flakes!

SCALP SCRUBS: THE LATEST ANTI-DANDRUFF HAIR CARE TREND

If you suffer from dandruff, it might be time to consider investing in a scalp scrub. We give the lowdown on the haircare trend bloggers and hair professionals love and why it really works.

Scalp exfoliation: what’s it all about?

For years scalp scrubs have been a well-kept hair care secret used by professionals, but now this effective treatment for dandruff is finally hitting the mainstream, with off-the-shelf products becoming increasingly popular. Many dandruff sufferers are considering scalp scrubs as an alternative to traditional shampoos and this intriguing exfoliation technique has recently been gaining a lot of attention on hair and beauty blogs, but can it really help with symptoms of dandruff?

Taking care of your scalp is as important as taking care of your skin. We know that the scalp is composed of the same kind of hydrolipidic film as the skin, as well as being exposed to the same kind of external aggressors. This means that regularly exfoliating the scalp, just as we do our face and body, is also important for overall hair health.

How scalp scrubs can help with symptoms of dandruff?

The act of exfoliating removes dead skin cells and encourages blood flow to the scalp - essential for healthy hair. However, if you suffer from recurring adherent or greasy dandruff, it’s important to also opt for a clinically proven solution that targets the excess oil responsible for adherent dandruff. Treatments such as Vichy Dercos Micro Peel Shampoo, an exfoliating anti-dandruff shampoo for oily scalps, targets both the hair condition and the appearance of the scalp. It contains Salicylic acid and that exfoliates and soothes the scalp to leave it looking healthier. It’s also enriched with glycerin and niacinamide, which helps to condition the hair and reduce the appearance of greasy hair.

So, if you’re noticing a build-up of greasy dandruff that just won’t budge, don’t hesitate to treat your hair to an exfoliating treatment to ensure both your scalp and your hair stays healthy and looking its best.
