Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition where patches of skin can become dry, itchy, inflamed, cracked and sore: often affects hands, elbows, knees, face and/or scalp. It can be treated.

What is it and how do I manage it?

Eczema is a well-known dry, inflammatory skin condition. Although it is mainly seen as a problem in children, it can affect people of all ages. You may find that, even if you have ‘grown out’ of childhood eczema, it can come back when you are an adult. Although the exact cause of eczema is not known, your genetics play a role, so you may find it runs in your family.

What you might not realise is there are many different types of eczema that can affect different body parts. The good news is that eczema is not contagious, but you may have times when it is worse than others – this is known as a flare-up.

If you have eczema, your skin is different to the skin in healthy people. It may not produce as much fats and oils, which makes it harder to trap moisture in your skin. This weakens your skin barrier leading to dry, irritated, cracked skin. Eczema skin is more prone to irritation and allergic reactions, making your skin red and inflamed.

Eczema can be itchy, making you scratch – and further damaging your skin in the process. This itch-scratch cycle can then continue to make your eczema worse.

E45 creams are effective moisturising treatments for protecting and rehydrating skin that’s dry, itchy or scaly. They can help you manage skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and ichthyosis.

FAQ

ITCHY SKIN

When we get an itch, it’s human nature to scratch it. But for some people, itching – known medically as pruritus – can be a big problem.

There are many causes of itchiness, from dry skin to pregnancy to conditions such as eczema. Significantly itchy skin is common, affecting around 8-9% of people in any two week period.

Most of us can manage to keep our itching under control, but for others it can set up something called the itch-scratch cycle. Your skin feels itchy, so you scratch to relieve the itch, but this makes the skin feel irritated and itchy, so you scratch again. All this scratching then damages your skin barrier, leading to the following conditions:

SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH ITCHY SKIN

  • Broken skin
  • Bleeding skin
  • Red skin
  • Thickened skin
  • Skin infections (getting in through broken skin)

Side Effects

Like all medicines, E45 Cream can cause side effects, however, this may be less likely.

  • Do not use it, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • Do not use it, if you have an allergic reaction or worsening of acne may occur.

If you suspect an allergic reaction, such as a rash, or if anything unusual happens, stop using the product.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, our Rightdose pharmacists or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

You can help to make medicines safer by reporting any side-effects to the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard.

If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

WHAT IS AN EMOLLIENT?

Emollients are effective moisturising treatments for protecting and rehydrating skin that’s dry, itchy or scaly. They can help you manage skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and ichthyosis.

Applied directly to the skin, emollients provide a protective barrier to the skin, locking in moisture. They help to prevent patches of inflammation and skin condition flare-ups.

EMOLLIENTS AS A HEALTHY SKINCARE REGIME

There are many different types of emollient products available: lotions, sprays, creams, ointments, gels or soap substitutes. It’s a good idea to experiment with what works best for you, to create a daily skincare regime. For example, you could apply cream every day, and carry a small tube for handy application when you’re out and about.

An emollient soap substitute can help keep your skin moisturised while bathing or hand washing. It won’t foam like normal soap, but it works just as well to cleanse your skin.
