About Otrivine Nasal Drops
Otrivine Nasal Drops aim to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion - a blocked and stuffy nose.
Nasal Congestion can occur due to:
-A result of a cold
-Inflamed nasal passage.
Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops contain the active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride. This belongs to a group of drugs called ‘sympathomimetics’ which act by constricting blood vessels within the nose, reducing their size and relieving inflammation. They also reduce excessive nasal secretions, helping to open up and clear the nasal passage.
Because of their effect on blood vessels, otrivine adult nasal drops should be used with caution if you have a heart or circulatory condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or narrow-angle glaucoma. If you suffer from any of these conditions it’s recommended that you consult your pharmacist before using this product.
Using Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops
Otrivine Nasal Drops should be applied to each nostril.
After tilting your head back, 2-3 drops should be applied to each nostril up to three times a day.
Otrivine Adult Nasal Drops should only be used in adults and children above the age of 12.
To reduce the spread of infection and to improve hygiene, each bottle should only be used by one person.
You should not use these drops longer than 7 consecutive days. This is due to the risk of rebound congestion on prolonged use of a decongestant.
Otrivine adults nasal drops are effective in treating symptoms of congestion however if you don’t see an improvement in one week then you should stop using this product.
Otrivine also comes in a spray form otrivine sinusitis nasal spray available from our online pharmacy. This spray contains the same active ingredient giving similar effects but with a different mode of application. You made find using a spray easier than applying drops.
Otrivine child nasal drops and spray are also available for the use in children above the age of six. They contain the same active ingredient but at as a lesser strength.
Other decongestant sprays and drops are also available from our online pharmacy:
- Vicks sinex soother spray - contains a similar decongestant, oxymetazoline.
- Sudafed decongestant liquid - contains the decongestant pseudoephedrine.
Steroid sprays can also be used to aid decongestion:
- Dymista - azelastine and fluticasone
- Beconase - beclometasone
Steroid sprays help to reduce inflammation in the nasal passage and can be used for longer periods of time than decongestants.
If you are taking any medication or suffer from any of the earlier named conditions you should consult your pharmacist before using a decongestant or steroid nasal spray.
For a more natural approach to nasal decongestant, alternative products are available:
- Sterimar congestion relief - contains salt water to help actively unblock the nose.
- Vicks inhaler - contains menthol, camphor and pine needle oil.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
It is advised that you consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this treatment if you are pregnant. This is due to the vasoconstrictor effect decongestants have on blood vessels that can potentially cause an increase in blood pressure.
