Toothpaste
Overview
Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day and rinsing with mouthwash will put you on the path to good oral health.
However, you also need to use the correct brushing technique. You should:
- Brush for at least two minutes
- Floss before or after brushing
- Do not rinse after brushing, unless you mouthwash
When you brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste, residual fluoride remains on the teeth. This continues to protect your teeth after brushing. Rinsing with water washes this away, so the ongoing protection is lost.
As well as using the correct brushing technique, you should choose a toothpaste that encourages you and your family to brush.
Choosing toothpaste
There are many varieties of toothpaste available. You should choose the toothpaste that’s right for you.
Some types of toothpaste help to strengthen sensitive teeth. Some are formulated to help fight gum disease. Most toothpaste is minty, but you can get toothpaste that’s fruit flavoured - usually for children.
Whatever variety of toothpaste you choose, you should ensure it’s at least 1250 ppm fluoride. This gives your teeth the protection they need.
If you’re choosing toothpaste for babies or young children, you should pick one that’s around 1000 ppm fluoride. It makes sense to get children into the habit of brushing their teeth as early as possible.
