What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis is a serious disease that causes inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It is spread through coughing, sneezing and kissing. Meningitis can cause serious complications, like nerve damage, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and can be fatal.

It is most prevalent in babies, children, teenagers and young adults. Meningococcal group B bacteria is responsible for around 90% of meningococcal cases in the UK. The good news is you can get vaccinated.

What are the symptoms of Meningitis B?

Symptoms may include:

  • High temperature
  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting
  • Stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to bright light
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness or difficulty waking
  • Seizures
  • A rash that does not fade under pressure

A rash may not always appear, so do not wait for a rash before seeking help.

Emergency advice: Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you think you or someone else may have meningitis.

Who can get the Meningitis B Vaccine at Rightdose?

 

We vaccinate children over 2 and adults. You may wish to consider private Men B vaccination if you are:

  • A parent wanting protection for your child
  • A teenager or young adult
  • A student going to university
  • Someone living in shared accommodation
  • Someone who missed MenB vaccination as a child
  • A parent of a child born before MenB vaccination became part of the routine NHS childhood schedule

 

Why should I get Vaccinated?

It is estimated that 1 in 10 meningitis cases are fatal. Getting vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent meningitis B. 

Is the Meningitis B vaccine the same as MenACWY?

No. MenB protects against meningococcal group B. MenACWY protects against groups A, C, W and Y.

Can the MenB vaccine cause meningitis?

No. It is not a live vaccine and cannot cause meningitis.

Is the Meningitis B Vaccine Available on the NHS?

The MenB vaccine has been part of the NHS routine childhood immunisation programme for babies since 2015. Following recent meningococcal disease outbreaks in the UK, Scotland is offering a time-limited NHS MenB vaccination programme during summer 2026 for eligible teenagers and new college and university students under 25 who are at increased risk of infection.
