Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly in parts of Asia and the Western Pacific. Most infections cause no symptoms, but in a small number of people the virus can affect the brain, leading to severe illness.
The disease cannot spread directly from person to person.
Although the risk for most travellers is low, vaccination is recommended for people spending longer periods in affected regions or travelling to rural areas where mosquitoes are common.

The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is given as two injections.
For some adults aged 18–65 years, an accelerated schedule may be suitable where the second dose is given 7 days after the first.
For long-term protection, a booster dose may be recommended after one year if you remain at ongoing risk.
