Yellow Fever is a virus that is caused by infected mosquito bites. The symptoms of the infection include fever, headache, fatigue and nausea. It can also cause jaundice in some people people hence the word “Yellow” in referenced it’s name. Some patients go on to develop more serious symptoms and around half of them suffer death within 7-10 days.
Vaccination against Yellow Fever is the most effective way to prevent the disease.
Yellow Fever is prevalent in parts of Africa, Central and South America as well as Trinidad. The most up to date information can be found here.
You should get the vaccine at least 10 days before travelling as the vaccine will not become effective until 10 days post vaccination. The vaccine is valid for life, so boosters are not normally recommended.
You will be provided with an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP).

We are a registered Yellow Fever Centre and vaccinate adults and children over two years. Some people might not be able to receive the vaccine from us due to immunosuppression, certain medical conditions or if they have had an MMR vaccine in the last four weeks. The Pharmacist will assess whether the vaccine is suitable for you.
In most people, the side effects are mild and get better within three days. The side effects include pain at injection site, headache, fever and muscle pains.
In very rare cases, people can develop serious side effects that resemble the Yellow Fever infection and can potentially be fatal This is more prevalent in young babies under nine months and adults over 60.
The Pharmacist will assess the suitability of each patient to ensure the vaccine is administered safely.
