What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis is a serious disease that causes inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It is spread through coughing, sneezing and kissing. Meningitis can cause serious complications, like nerve damage, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and can be fatal.

It is most prevalent in babies, children, teenagers and young adults. Meningococcal group B bacteria is responsible for around 90% of meningococcal cases in the UK. The good news is you can get vaccinated.

What are the symptoms of Meningitis B?

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • A red pinprick rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (the rash might not appear at all sometimes)

Why should I get Vaccinated?

It is estimated that 1 in 10 meningitis cases are fatal. Getting vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent meningitis B. 

Please note, since 2015, the meningitis B vaccine has been offered to babies and children as part of the NHS childhood immunisation programme. However, children born before 2015 might not have received the meningitis B vaccine. We can provide this vaccine privately for them.
