Most sore throats are caused by a viral infection and are part of the common cold and flu symptoms along with a blocked or runny nose, a cough and general aches. This type of a sore throat normally gets better within a few days with most people only requiring symptomatic treatment (painkillers or soothing lozenges/sprays).

Important Information

How Do I Know If I Have a Strep Throat?

Some sore throats can be caused by a bacterial infection. The main cause of it is a Group A Streptococcus also known as ‘Strep A.’ If left untreated, in some cases Strep A can lead to more serious complications like scarlet fever, impetigo, and pneumonia. The good news is that bacterial throat infections respond well to antibiotics.

Most of the time a Strep A throat does not present with the cold symptoms like a cough, sneezing or a blocked nose.

The symptoms start with a sudden onset of a sore throat and sometimes a raised temperature.

However, some viral infections can occasionally turn into bacterial infections. It can be difficult to differentiate between the two, therefore a rapid Strep A test is a quick and efficient way to find out the cause.
