Introducing CeraVe

In just 14 years, CeraVe has gone from a fledgling US skincare brand offering three core products to a global cult favourite. Our dermatologist-backed and multi-award-winning range is also now available in over 35 countries.

Back in 2005 we brought together a group of expert dermatologists in ingredient formulation design and asked them what they would want included in a skincare brand.

The answer was ceramides. These are lipids that are found naturally in the skin and make up 50% of the skin’s barrier. When ceramide levels are low, it weakens your skin’s natural barrier, allowing moisture to escape from your skin. Ceramide-rich products, which apply it to the skin, help to replenish existing ceramides and your skin to retain its moisture and stay hydrated for longer. Our team of expert dermatologists developed a line of skincare products enriched with a blend of three essential ceramides (ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II) along with fatty acids and other lipids, which also inspired the 'Cera' part of our name.

The ‘Ve’ comes from our innovative MultiVesicular Emulsion Technology (MVE) delivery system. It enables our products to release moisturising ingredients over the course of 24 hours and keep your skin hydrated and soft throughout the day.

What does our range include?
With the discovery of our combination of ceramides and MVE, we launched in 2006 in the US with three core CeraVe products; a moisturising cream, moisturising lotion and hydrating cleanser, and the rest is skincare history.

We came to the UK in 2018 and now offer a full range of products including facial and body cleansers and facial and body moisturisers that are still developed with the expertise of dermatologists and focused on protecting your skin barrier and providing long-term hydration even with a single use.

CeraVe Today
CeraVe currently offers a full range of products delivering skincare products for all, developed with the expertise of dermatologists. CeraVe is the affordable, accessible, dermatologist-recommended solution to hydrate, protect and replenish skin.

Our Award Winners
It’s always a true honour for our products to be acknowledged with awards, especially when they’re voted for by beauty experts, editors and consumers. The CeraVe brand has just won the 'Best Skincare Brand of 2021' award from The Times.

For your facial routine, we recommend "double cleanse".

  • Firstly remove makeup & impurities with CeraVe Micellar Cleansing Water.
  • Secondly, follow up with a cleanser suited to your skin type & desired skin benefit.

We recommend: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin, or CeraVe Foaming Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin.

FAQ

WHO SHOULD USE A CLEANSER?

No matter what type of skin you have, whether it’s dry, oily, combination or sensitive, cleanser is a skincare staple in any routine. A gentle facial cleanser and body cleanser are must-haves for all skin types when you’re looking to maintain fresh, healthy-looking skin. Face and body washes help thoroughly cleanse your skin of dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells, and set the stage for the rest of your skincare regimen.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACIAL CLEANSER AND A BODY WASH?

Whereas facial cleansers are formulated with the delicate skin on your face in mind, body cleansers are designed to support the skin on your body (which can affect the concentration of active ingredients used, for example). Always read the label carefully to discover if your cleanser has been formulated for use on your face, body, or in some cases, is suitable for both.

WHAT IS THE "DOUBLE CLEANSING" METHOD?

"Double cleansing" refers to a facial cleansing method where you wash your face twice in a row, using two different cleansers. This is most often done by using an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-soluble cleanser that’s best-suited for your skin type (cream, gel, or lotion). "Double cleansing" can be useful for some skin types (such as oily skin), but its benefits will vary depending on your skin’s needs.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST CLEANSER FOR MY FACE?

To help support the delicate skin on your face, it’s especially important to look for gentle, non-comedogenic cleansers that won’t clog your pores, as well as fragrance-free products with beneficial ingredients.

For example, whereas foaming cleansers are generally recommended for oily skin types, a cream-based formula can be a great option for dry skin.

Or, if you have rough and bumpy skin, you may benefit from choosing a facial cleanser with salicylic acid to help gently cleanse and exfoliate your skin.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser - Best for: Normal to Dry Skin
Normal to dry skin types need a cleanser that is both hydrating and gentle, such as CeraVe’s Hydrating Cleanser. This soothing cleanser is specifically formulated for sensitive skin on the face and body that’s prone dryness. As with all CeraVe formulas, it contains 3 Essential Ceramides to help protect the natural skin barrier (responsible for blocking harmful irritants) and Hyaluronic Acid to attract and retain moisture on the skin. Use it every morning and evening and follow with your usual serum and moisturiser.

SA Smoothing Cleanser - Best for: Rough and Bumpy Skin.
Also suitable for Keratosis Pilaris & Psoriasis prone skin
If you have rough, bumpy skin on your body, you may need a cleanser that hydrates and exfoliates at the same time. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser does this with a formula enriched with exfoliating Salicylic Acid, 3 Essential Ceramides and hydrating Hyaluronic Acid. When used each morning and evening, this cleanser gently removes oil, dirt and makeup from the skin and can also be used on skin prone to Keratosis Pilaris.

Cream to Foam Cleanser - Best for: Normal to Dry Skin
If you have a dry skin type and want to remove makeup, you’ll need a cleanser that doesn’t strip or damage the skin. One of the latest innovations is CeraVe’s Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser that is formulated to effectively remove makeup, oils and dirt without leaving the face feeling tight. It also removes eye and facial makeup with ease, so there’s no need to double cleanse (a known moisture stripper) or use multiple products. It does this with an efficacious formula that features an amino-acid surfactant to remove dirt and oil alongside Hyaluronic Acid and 3 Essential Ceramides that attract and retain water on the skin and protect the skin’s natural barrier.

CeraVe Foaming Cleanser - Best for: Combination and Oily skin types

Combination skin types are more prone to discomfort and imperfections so require a cleanser that soaks up oil without drying the skin out. CeraVe’s Foaming Cleanser is recommended by dermatologists due to the way it gently cleanses the skin with a refreshing foam action and calms the skin with the B3 vitamin, Niacinamide. This foaming action negates the need for double cleansing which can actually damage the barrier function and cause redness, irritation, and dryness.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE A FACE OR BODY CLEANSER?

A gentle cleanser is the first step in any skincare routine. To reap the full benefits of your facial cleanser or body wash, use them daily in the morning or at night, or as directed by a dermatologist. After cleansing, continue with the rest of your regimen and finish by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning.

When in doubt, consult with your dermatologist for the best personalized advice on choosing a cleanser for your skin’s needs.

Your Everyday Hydrating Facial Routine with CeraVe

If you have dry and dehydrated skin, finding a soothing yet protective skincare routine is vital for keeping your complexion healthy looking. You’ll need each product within your regime to help your skin retain water and protect the skin barrier, without overloading it with excess oil. Not sure where to start? Here’s our recommended everyday hydrating facial routine and the CeraVe products to include.

Step 1: Remove makeup and impurities with a hydrating cleanser
First things first, you’ll need to cleanse your skin twice a day: once in the morning and again in the evening. This will help to remove makeup, debris and pollution from the skin, and create a clean and receptive base for the rest of the products that follow. Take care to use a gentle product such as CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser that’s suitable for normal to dry skin. This cleanser is specifically formulated for sensitive skin and gently removes dirt and oil while increasing skin hydration.

Step 2: Lock in moisture with a hyaluronic acid-rich serum
Once your skin is cleansed and patted dry, a serum will help to lock in and retain moisture. Serums are an effective way of delivering active ingredients directly to the skin thanks to their lightweight low-molecular structure. CeraVe’s Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum, for example, is formulated with the humectant hyaluronic acid , three Essential Ceramides and Vitamin B5, which helps dry skin retain moisture for a consistently hydrated, radiant complexion alongside Vitamin B5 that helps to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.

Step 3: Comfort and soothe the skin with a moisturizer
Once your serum has absorbed into the skin, follow it with a moisturiser of your choice. This step will help to further lock in moisture and bring comfort to the skin. CeraVe’s AM Facial Moisturising Lotion is a great option for the morning due to its lightweight texture and broad-spectrum SPF25 protection. It’s also formulated with three naturally occurring ceramides and hyaluronic acid which retain moisture and support the skin barrier.

In the evening, your skin’s needs are slightly different so you may want to apply a slightly richer moisturiser to address skin dryness and sensitivity. CeraVe’s PM Facial Moisturising Lotion utilises patented MVE® delivery technology to help replenish ceramides and deliver controlled, long-lasting hydration while you sleep.

Step 4: Hydrate the delicate area with a targeted cream
The delicate eye area can become sensitive and dehydrated if it’s not adequately hydrated, so a dedicated eye cream should be the last step within your routine. CeraVe’s Eye Repair Cream is specifically formulated to hydrate and protect the delicate eye area with three naturally occurring ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The formula leaves the eye area looking brighter, more awake and ready for the day ahead.

Directions

How to use:

  • Shake well, then saturate a cotton or reusable pad.
  • To remove eye makeup: Hold over closed eyes for a few seconds, then gently wipe without harsh rubbing
  • To cleanse skin and remove face makeup: Gently wipe over skin until completely free of makeup and impurities.

There’s no need to rinse.

Suitable for use in the morning and evening.

We recommend building this into your cleansing routine, with double cleansing.

What are Ceramides?

Ceramides make up 50% of the skin barrier
Ceramides are lipids (oils) found naturally in skin and are essential in supporting the skin barrier and retaining moisture. All CeraVe products are enriched with ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II to help protect skin’s natural barrier.

Ceramides restore and hydrate
When ceramide levels are low, the skin barrier is weakened, allowing moisture to escape from skin. Applying ceramides directly to skin helps protect its barrier and retain moisture.

Ceramides are in all CeraVe Products
The unique combination of 3 essential ceramides in CeraVe (ceramides 1, 3, 6-II) help replenish skin’s existing ceramides, relieving dry skin, by reducing moisture loss, increasing hydration and protecting the skin barrier. Explore our full range of products.
