FAQ

THE DOUBLE CLEANSING METHOD FOR BLEMISH-PRONE SKIN

How to do the double cleansing method for blemish-prone skin Skincare routines can be confusing. Fortunately, double cleansing is as easy as it sounds.

What is double cleansing?
As its name suggests, the double cleansing method is a two-step cleansing process. If you have oily or blemish-prone skin, like to layer on your sunscreen or wear heavy makeup, you’ll find the double cleansing has double the benefits and offers the most thorough cleanse. Also known as the oil cleansing method, it involves cleaning your face with an oil-based cleanser first and a second water-based cleanser.

The benefits of double cleansing
Oil-based cleansers are designed to remove oil-based impurities, SPF, makeup and sebum. When followed by a water-based cleanser, it leaves them to focus on clearing your skin of sweat and dirt. Combined, they can clean your skin more thoroughly and effectively, and also improve the efficacy of your other skincare steps.

Can you use micellar water to double cleanse?
You certainly can. Micellar water is made up of purified water and micelles – cleansing oil molecules, which are effective at removing oil and dirt. This combination makes micellar water a great choice for a gentle first cleanse before following with a foaming formula.

Will double cleansing make my skin oilier?
While the idea of adding an oil-based cleanser to oily skin may sound counterproductive, double cleansing can help to remove excess oil that your one-step process doesn’t. Rather than choosing a stronger, harsh cleanser, double cleansing with two gentle cleansers that focus on clearing the skin of different impurities can have better results and avoid stripping the skin’s surface of essential oils.

If you are worried about encouraging your oily skin to break out by oil cleansing, you can always use a micellar water as your first cleansing step.

Our best cleansers for double cleansing
Our La Roche-Posay Micellar Water has been tested on the most sensitive skin, so is suitable for everyone. Apply with a cotton wool pad to cleanse and remove makeup and impurities – this low-maintenance high-performing favourite doesn’t require any rinsing or rubbing.

For sensitive skin, follow with Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser Wipe-Off Milk. It’s enriched with Glycerine and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water to soothe skin while cleansing it of impurities.

Alternatively, Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel facial wash is specially formulated for oily, blemish-prone skin. Create a lather with warm water before massaging into the face to lift dirt and reduce the appearance of spots and shine. Remember to rinse thoroughly afterwards.

For medical conditions seek advice from your GP.

ACNE HORMONES AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES: THE BIOLOGY BEHIND ACNE

Acne is a common skincare concern that can affect many of us throughout our adult lives – from our teenage years, through pregnancy and even later in life. But what causes acne to develop and are there any ways that you can help to reduce it? Here we take a look at some of the most common causes of acne and the solutions to try.

Lifestyle
There are a number of myths about acne and, contrary to popular belief, acne isn’t caused by poor diet or hygiene. The NHS advises that most of the biological reactions that trigger acne occur beneath the skin and so far, research has not found any foods that cause acne. This isn’t an excuse to eat badly, however, and a good well-balanced diet is always good for your overall health.

Hormones
Hormonal changes play a key role in the development of acne so it’s important to understand how these change throughout our lives. In puberty, our bodies create greater levels of testosterone to help maintain muscle and bone strength which can cause the glands on the skin to secrete more sebum. This blocks the pores, creating congestion and often leading to breakouts and acne.

Later on in our adult lives, periods and pregnancy can also create quite significant changes in our hormone levels which can lead to acne breakouts. Many women find that they’re more prone to a breakout before their period arrives, or during the first three months of pregnancy when hormone levels change rapidly. Other conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can also have a similar effect on the skin.

Can birth control help with acne?
According to the NHS, hormonal therapies or the combined oral contraceptive pill can be an effective way of treating acne in women. This is due to the way that the pill reduces the circulation of androgens which help to control sebum production. Contraceptive medication must contain estrogen and progesterone to improve acne so speak to your doctor if you are considering taking it for this reason.

Solutions and treatments
In order to find the right solution and treatment for your skin, it’s advisable to visit your doctor or dermatologist. A professional will be able to help you confirm whether or not you do have acne and, if so, how severe it is.

More serious cases of acne will require stronger treatments prescribed by a healthcare professional, while milder cases can often be improved with products from your pharmacy. La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar range, for example, is specifically formulated for the needs of blemish-prone skin and has a number of products to help improve it – no matter the cause.

Effaclar Duo+ is one of our most popular anti-blemish moisturisers that’s formulated for the needs of both adults and teenagers. Its dual-action gel formula uses ingredients such as Lipo Hydroxy Acid & Salicylic Acid to help reduce the appearance of blemishes and blackheads while controlling shine and helps reduce the appearance of marks. It should help your skin appear clearer.

DAY-TO-DAY CLEANSER AND MOISTURISER SELECTION FOR THOSE WITH ACNE-PRONE SKIN

For those with acne-prone skin, having a consistent daily skincare regime is important for so many reasons. Being persistent with your regime, and not chopping and changing products every week, will mean that acne-prone skin is less likely to become irritated by an overload of products. Patience is also important, products need to be given a proper chance to work otherwise they won't make any difference to your skin. Too many people who suffer from blemishes do not continue with their regimes long enough to see results. This is our selection of the day-to-day skincare products you should stick to if you want to see a difference in your acne-prone skin.

Cleansing is an important step for those with blemish-prone skin, as the right cleanser not only leaves your skin feeling clear and fresh, but can also tackle the causes of blemishes.

Effaclar Purifying Micellar Water removes makeup and cleanses the skin, making it a great product to use in the morning and evening. Using micellar water is an ideal way to remove makeup if you do have blemish prone skin as the gentle application enables you to avoid scrubbing at, and aggravating, existing blemishes.

As well as effectively removing makeup, the Effaclar Micellar Water helps to control sebum production. If you have blemish prone skin the likelihood is you’ve heard the word sebum before. Excess sebum production can lead to pores clogging and blemishes being created, so controlling sebum production is vital for ensuring clear skin.

Micellar water is still effective In the morning, when you have yet to put any makeup on your face. The gentle and fresh solution gives an immediate clean skin sensation, making it an ideal way to start your skincare regime.

If you have blemishes, your skin can often be oily and sensitive, this makes some people want to skip the step of moisturising as they believe their skin needs ‘drying’ out rather than hydrating. No matter if your skin is dry or oily, a moisturiser is still a necessary step in any skincare regime.

Effaclar Mat is a daily moisturiser which has been specifically formulated for oily and shiny skin. Far from exacerbating the problem, Effaclar Mat controls sebum and has anti-shine properties. The moisturiser is mattifying and hydrating, making it an excellent choice for those with oily or shiny skin. Effaclar Mat is suitable for adults and teenagers, men and women; however it does make a great primer for women who are looking to follow up their moisturiser with makeup.

For those with specific blemishes they are looking to target, there’s Effaclar K (+) or Effaclar DUO [+].

The ingredients in Effaclar K (+) make it ideal for those looking to eliminate the signs of blackheads and oiliness. The addition of Carnosine helps manage the rise of blackheads, whilst Airlicium absorbs 100 times its weight in sebum, leaving skin matte and fresh. For acne-prone skin, Effaclar DUO [+] contains Salicylic acid and LHA’s which provide an exfoliating action to the skin, whilst also soothing inflammation and excess sebum production.

Being strict with yourself and your skincare regime will pay off in the long-run. This day-to-day selection of products for acne-prone skin takes the stress out of caring for your skin every day!

HOW ADDING MORE SEEDS TO YOUR DIET CAN HELP IMPROVE YOUR ACNE

Stuffed with nutrients, the tiny little grains are gaining rave reviews and are an essential part of our diet. So, will they improve our skin? Can seeds really help us deal with breakouts?

So, what exactly are the benefits of adding seeds like flax seed (linseed), chia, sunflower or hemp to our diet?

1) More fiber is good for you
Seeds are an excellent source of fiber which encourages good colon and gut health which can help combat acne.

2) Good oils help cell regeneration
It turns out those tiny seeds can help with collagen production! Seeds contain "good oils" which boost collagen and help with cell regeneration and growth.

3) Seeds are rich in Omega 3
Seeds are a natural source of omega 3 fatty acids. Studies show that omega 3 naturally inhibits inflammatory chemical leukotriene B4, helping reduce acne symptoms.

4) Seeds are rich in zinc
He adds that seeds contain zinc, a mineral which helps with gut problems and improves immunity.

5) Seeds don’t suffer the curse of processed foods
Seeds are a natural food containing little of the bad compounds found in processed foods known to aggravate acne such as hydrogenated oils, sugar, HFCS. It makes sense: the less additives the better for problem skin!

6) Seeds bring vitamin E to the party
The final reason to add seeds to your diet? Seeds are high in vitamin E. Vitamin E can help reduce the appearance of acne scars and speed up recovery from acne.

DOES USING TURMERIC ON SKIN HELP TO GET RID OF ACNE?

If you enjoy Indian cooking, it's likely you're already familiar with the deep orange root turmeric. But did you know that it's also reputed to have properties that help treat skin conditions such as acne.

What is turmeric?

Part of the ginger family, turmeric has been used in Indian cooking for thousands of years as one of the main ingredients in curries and other national dishes. These days, while turmeric is still a popular spice for cooking, it's also developed a fan following who believe the plant can help with a number of health concerns, from diabetes to depression and even acne.

How can turmeric help with acne and skin problems?

Actually, it's not the turmeric itself which has possible acne-fighting properties, but its main component, curcumin, which gives the plant its orange colour as well as its reputation.

Curcumin is strongly anti-bacterial, including against P. Acnes bacteria (the ones connected to acne symptoms). A study published in 2013 suggested that curcumin was up to 36 times stronger than azelaic acid, which is often prescribed in creams to treat acne. Curcumin is also anti-fungal, although not any more so than antifungal medication, which can be helpful in the treatment of candida fungus skin infections. Research has also shown that curcumin can help sufferers of skin conditions such as psoriasis.

It is perhaps the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin that give it such a glowing reputation when it comes to acne, and explains why it has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to reduce inflammation. Curcumin inhibits the spread of inflammation among cells, and turns down the intensity of inflammatory factors such as enzymes and protein kinases.

Using turmeric/curcumin

Turmeric can be taken orally, in the form of a capsule, or applied topically. However, be warned, applying turmeric directly to your face will leave you with an orange complexion afterwards (usually removable with cleanser)! The taste is not to everyone's liking either, especially not on its own. You should also be aware that side effects could occur if you ingest too much turmeric so, if you're giving it a try, keep the dose low. Or you could simply make a curry tonight and get your turmeric from there!
