HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AGEING SIGNS AND DEHYDRATION

If you’ve noticed fine lines and wrinkles beginning to appear for the first time, you may assume that they’re caused by age. But this is actually just one part of the story and ageing signs can often be confused with dehydration.

So how can you tell the difference between premature ageing and dehydration lines?

Dehydration in the skin can affect all skin types and is caused by multiple factors in our environment - from hard water, air conditioning, pollution and even medication. These factors compromise the skin’s natural protective barrier which allows hyaluronic acid and water to leak from the skin. The result? Dry skin that’s lacking in plumpness and often feels tight – especially after cleansing.

Premature ageing doesn’t cause any discomfort in the way dehydration does, and is predominantly caused by environmental factors. Ageing signs are also more visible and anchored than dehydration lines. Dehydration lines, on the other hand, are seen in a variety of places all at once and make the skin appear tight with lost elasticity.

The good news is that as dehydration is caused by barrier dysfunction, it can be corrected quicklywith the right skincare. Premature ageing signs can also be improved and plumped with skincare rich in humectants such as hyaluronic acid. This hydrating ingredient penetrates the cells of the skin, helping to increase the production of collagen and elastin while smoothing the appearance of the skin.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Aquagel - Anti-Photoaging Serum SPF30 

Hyalu B5 is an intensely hydrating serum enriched with hyaluronic acid that is clinically proven to re-plump the skin and accelerate skin repair. This makes it great at treating signs of ageing in complexions that have a loss of volume and skin elasticity.

Its formula contains vitamin B5 and two different-sized molecules of hyaluronic acid: the first re-plumps the surface of the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, while the smaller molecule penetrates deeper into the skin to increase skin volume.

You can pair this concentrate with a vitamin C serum such as La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C-10. This active product will help to prevent further environmental damage and work alongside Hyalu B5 to prevent premature ageing.

THE SMART GUIDE TO 40s SKINCARE

As a woman, particularly, the physiology of your skin changes significantly in your 40s and 50s. This is related in part to changing hormonal levels. As these levels fall, there is reduced production of collagen, elastin and other components of the skin matrix. There are a number of visible changes that occur including:

• Accelerated development of fine lines and wrinkles
• Deepening of wrinkles "in motion" – wrinkles that develop in areas where facial movement result in folding of the skin
• Uneven skin pigmentation, redness, or broken capillaries
• Loss of subcutaneous fat which contributes to a tired look and sagging of facial features
• Whilst these changes are part of the normal ageing process, measures can be taken to reduce the appearance of some of these. Often, the difficulty can be finding time to stick to an elaborate skin care routine. However, using the right products, even if you are short on time, you should see results in keeping your skin looking healthy and glowing regardless of your biological age.

So here, I have devised a cheat’s list of the absolute minimum your skin needs to deal with common problems from your 40s onwards.

Cleanse your skin every night to remove dirt and environmental aggressors including air pollution that can contribute to premature skin ageing signs such as fine lines and pigmentation spots. Additionally, pollutant particles and other impurities can collect on skin during the day and should be removed with a good cleansing routine.

Hydration – moisturising daily will help improve the barrier function of your skin so it is less vulnerable to feeling dry and uncomfortable.

Sunscreen – ultraviolet radiation is the most common culprit for premature skin ageing. Sun damage is cumulative over the years, and whilst you can’t undo the damage that has already taken place, you can prevent further additive damage to your skin. Use a product enriched with retinol before bed. These products are effective in improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

Incorporate a serum into your routine, using it before your moisturiser morning and evening. Serums are clear, gel-like solutions which are absorbed quickly and penetrate into the skin. They are a fast-acting, intensive, transformative care to address a specific skincare concern therefore play a key role in your anti-aging armory.

When to use:

Only use Hyalu B5 Aquagel in the morning.

Avoid direct contact with eyes and lips.

Directions:

• Cleanse: Lather cleanser in the hand with warm water. Massage gently onto the face avoiding eye area. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry gently. 
• Apply a few drops of the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Aquagel serum in the morning on the face and neck, to tone your skin.
• You don't need to apply protective broad-spectrum sun protection as the serum is already enriched with SPF30 sunscreen.

Safety Warnings:

Always use a SPF <15+ in the morning, as this product may increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun. La Roche-Posay recommends SPF 50+ for sensitive skin.
