FAQ

MENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN LOSS

Skin sagging occurs quite often in postmenopausal women, particularly due to the loss of collagen. But don't worry, there are plenty of soft solutions that can help you.

Skin sagging during menopause is caused by rapid collagen loss during this period- as much as 30% during the first 5 years and 2% for the next 20 years.

Other consequences of collagen decrease on your skin

As collagen degrades, skin loses firmness, and jowls and fine lines start to appear. You may notice that dynamic smile and frown lines become permanent, your nose tip drops, the eye area hollows and pores become larger.

All these clinical changes in post-menopausal women are associated with cutaneous aging of all 3 layers of skin on the face (epidermis, dermis and hypodermis). Atrophy, dryness and fat pads slackening are the main signs of this, not very funky, but an absolutely normal process.

Atrophy corresponds to the massive reduction in the thickness of skin tissue. Everything that leads to this reduction can also alter communication and nutrient exchanges between the epidermis and the dermis, making it hard for your skin to keep its mechanical properties.

So you may also notice progressive degradation of the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the dermis, skin dryness and roughness due to decreased sebum secretion, a loss of elasticity, and a decreased ability to maintain moisture, which may also lead to loss of firmness.

In conclusion, your face may look different, a little tired and maybe it can alter your self-confidence.

So let’s prevent that or at least slow it down the best we can by:

  • Giving up smoking and reducing alcohol intake
  • Choosing a proper daily skincare tailored for pre- and post-menopausal skin and regular sun protection with high SPF that is water resistant.
  • Adopting a healthy, well-balanced diet
  • Practicing regular exercises

Key elements to remember

The reason why the skin sag during menopause is mostly due to a very quick collagen loss that consequently provokes other changes.

There are still plenty of things you can do about it including:

  • adopting a skin-care routine that you can stick to on a daily-basis
  • switching to a well-balanced diet.

HOW CAN I HELP MY SKIN DURING MENOPAUSE?

THE BEST ADVICE FOR A GOOD SKIN CARE ROUTINE:

Menopause is a very personal journey, deeply linked to your genes and familial heritage. Yet there are also a series of external factors. Those external factors can be managed with the help of a good skin-care routine. You are not alone facing menopause, we are here to help you understand what is happening in order to help you fight back.

Skin ageing is a result of both genetic and external factors

During perimenopause some negative changes like skin thinning, microcirculation disorders, degradation of collagen and elastic fibers, glycation and decreased sebum secretion become noticeable, and let’s face it, kind of rude too!

The good news is you can reduce these symptoms of menopause with the right skin-care routine recommended by your dermatologist and there are some universal rules:

  • Wash your face with a fragrance-free cleanser that is safe for your dry and sensitized skin.
  • Apply moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, humectants (e.g. glycerin) generously on the face and body whenever you feel dry (at least twice a day).
  • The good rhythm: wash gently, hydrate generously
  • Pay attention to skincare products rich in ceramides or omega 3 or 6 (e.g. shea butter, rice bran oil and safflower oil) that help to restore decreased levels of skin fatty acids responsible for flexibility and proper skin barrier functioning.

You may also need gentle daily exfoliation to provide better skin hydration and to encourage cell renewal while unclogging pores. Depending on your skin's condition, enzymatic peels, exfoliating polish or products based on glycolic acid are recommended.

Use skin-care products (creams, serums) that contain retinol, growth factors phyto-hormones, amino acids, vitamins C, E and A, peptides and other molecules regularly to address the signs of aging.

It is also essential to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, really an UVA one, before going out and always reapplying regularly. This priceless habit will protect your skin from sun damage, progressive skin thinning and photo-aging. So let’s not wait any longer, all right?

Key elements to remember for a good menopause skin care routine

A proper skin-care routine can prevent and help with your menopausal skin changes, here are the ingredients to seek out for in your products:

Moisturizers: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin or other humectants

Creams, serums and other skin-care products: omega oils, retinol, phyto-hormones, amino acids, vitamins C, E and A, peptides.

Exfoliating products: glycolic acid

Directions

When to use:

Use Vichy Neovadiol Phytosculpt Contour Cream each morning or evening after cleansing for a firmer and more elastic skin.

  • Cleanse the face thoroughly. Pat dry.
  • Follow with Minéral 89 or your usual Vichy serum to tone your skin.
  • Apply Phytosculpt Contour cream to skin with firm circular movements.
  • Gently pinch along the jaw, from chin to ears to aid tightening process.
  • Smooth product into skin with gentle massage, outwards from the centre of the face.

For best results apply your moisturizing Compensating Complex day/night cream across the face and neck after toning, avoiding the eye area.
