FAQ

WHAT DOES HYALURONIC ACID DO AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

Hyaluronic acid: The ultimate guide to the latest evolution in skincare Skin feeling dehydrated and dull? The beauty industry’s latest wonder ingredient could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

If you’re unfamiliar with Hyaluronic Acid, you may think from its scientific name that it’s been plucked straight from the periodic table. In fact, this skincare ingredient is incredibly gentle - a super-strength moisturiser that holds 1,000 times its weight in water.

But why should you use it and what benefit does it have on the skin? “Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in the skin,” says expert dermatologist Anjali Mahto. “The molecule itself is loved by both dermatologists and cosmetic scientists because it has a number of benefits. The main one is that it’s a humectant, so it binds a thousand times its capacity in water and is an incredibly hydrating molecule”.

As Hyaluronic Acid is produced naturally by the body, it’s accepted more readily than an artificial compound. In fact, the human body already carries around 15 grams of Hyaluronic Acid which it recycles each day.

So why do we need to add it topically to the skin if the body already creates it? Put simply, we create less and less as we age which leads to the appearance of fine lines and uneven skin texture. Hyaluronic Acid helps to address this by introducing much-needed moisture to not only the surface of the skin, but the deeper layers beneath it.

But not all types of Hyaluronic Acid are created equal and each can reap different rewards depending on their molecular weight. “They can vary in both their source and their size,” explains Anjali. “You can have low or high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid. The high molecular weight is very good for smoothing and plumping out the skin as it’s a much larger molecule, whereas the smaller molecule can be broken up or fragmented and is very, very good for targeted or specialised skincare. The good news is that both kinds of Hyaluronic Acid are gentle and safe to use on all skin types”.

Hyaluronic acid serum

If you’re looking to introduce Hyaluronic Acid to your everyday routine, try a serum such as Vichy’s Minéral 89. Its molecular structure allows it to soak into the deeper layers of the epidermis, providing up to 24-hour hydration and protection from urban aggressors such as pollution. It’s also suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, and has a minimal 11 ingredient formula. Simply apply it as the first step in your skincare routine.

For an intensive Hyaluronic Acid serum that reduces the signs of wrinkles and fine lines on the skin try Liftactiv Supreme HA Epidermal Filler Serum. Formulated with dermatological active ingredients such as Vitamin CG and B5, the serum plumps skin with moisture and helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with a filling effect.

Hyaluronic acid face mask

Additionally, a mask such as Vichy’s Hyalu Mask combines high and low-weight Hyaluronic Acid with agave yeast extract in a formula that delivers intense hydration to the skin. It also helps  plump the appearance of the skin and restores radiance.

Side Effects

Like all skin products, Vichy Mineral 89 Fortifying Instant Recovery Sheet Mask can cause side effects, however, this may be less likely.

Do not use it, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, our Rightdose pharmacists or nurse.

WHY VICHY MINERAL 89 IS ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
Mineral 89 - an essential Hyaluronic Acid hydration booster for every skincare routine Hyaluronic Acid is the wonder ingredient on every beauty editor and facialist’s lips. Why? Not only is it a super humectant that’s really effective at plumping and rehydrating the appearance of the skin – smoothing fine lines and wrinkles as it does – it’s also suitable for every skin type. Even sensitive. Discover how you can fit this moisturising molecule into your beauty routine, according to your skin type.

Dry and sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is often caused by aggressors and irritants in the environment that damage the skin’s natural barrier function. This barrier plays an important role in protecting the epidermis from bacteria while helping to hold in water. When it’s damaged, however, the skin can become more sensitive and prone to dryness and redness. This is where Hyaluronic Acid can really help to repair and strengthen the barrier, bringing some much-needed moisture and calmness back to the epidermis.

Your routine:

  • Vichy’s Mineral 89 Skin Booster should be the first step in your skincare routine so apply it to freshly cleansed, dry skin. This will help to hydrate the skin throughout the day while protecting the skin from aggressors in the environment.
  • Follow this with a super-soothing moisturiser such as Aqualia Day Cream to keep the complexion looking dewy and fresh for up to 48 hours.
  • Your final step should always be a lightweight broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV damage.

Oily and blemish-prone skin
Oily skin can be caused by a number of things such as genetics, hormones and stress which increase the production of sebum in the pores. While excess oil isn’t harmful to the skin, it can start to congest the pores over time leading to blemishes, open pores and blackheads.  If you have oily skin, you may think that adding extra moisture is the last thing your skin needs, but in fact, it can help. If you dry out an oily skin type with harsh ingredients, it will become very dry and produce more oil to compensate. Hyaluronic Acid on the other hand, can help to restore balance as it’s hydrating yet lightweight (holding 1000 times its own weight in water) so it won’t clog the pores or add extra oil to your skin.

Your routine:

  • Start by washing your skin thoroughly with a cleanser such as Normaderm’s Phyosolution Purifying Gel. This will clear excess sebum and impurities from the skin with salicylic acid and glycolic acid – chemical exfoliants that are gentle enough to be used every day.
  • Next, lock hydration into your skin with two to three pumps of the Mineral 89 Skin Booster and a lightweight moisturiser such as Normaderm’s Phytosolution Double Correction Daily Care. This will help to protect the skin’s barrier and control excess oil.

Ageing and menopausal skin
As we age, our skin naturally starts to lose moisture, collagen and elastin which creates sagging, lines and wrinkles to appear. Dryness in the skin can also be caused by hormonal changes in the body during the menopause. While we can’t stop the natural ageing process, we can help the skin to appear smoother and more radiant by replenishing lost moisture with our skincare. This is where Hyaluronic Acid really comes into its own as it creates a plumping effect in the epidermis, reducing the appearance of ageing signs and restoring comfort.

Your routine:

  • After washing your face with a hydrating cleanser, apply a Hyaluronic Acid-enriched booster such as Mineral 89 to instantly plump up the skin and improve the look of lines and wrinkles.
  • Next, help to strengthen the skin’s barrier function and stimulate cell  renewal with a concentrated dose of serum via an ampoule such as Vichy’s Liftactiv Peptide-C. This particular formula also contains multi-molecular Hyaluronic Acid and works to rehydrate and smooth the appearance of the epidermis.
  • If your skin is very thirsty, you can then follow this with a moisturiser suited to your needs. Vichy’s Collagen Specialist Day Cream can help improve the appearance of ageing signs such as a loss of firmness, skin tone and wrinkles. But if your skin dryness is more hormone related, Vichy’s Neovadiol Compensating Complex Day Cream will help to address ageing signs caused by the menopause.

Don’t forget, whatever your skin type, the last step in your routine should always be a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This will help to prevent the acceleration of ageing signs and UV damage. And, if you are unsure of your skin type, head to vichy.co.uk to use our SKINCONSULT AI technology – a skin ageing algorithm that identifies your skin priorities, developed with dermatologists.
