about haemorrhoids

haemorrhoids are also commonly referred to as piles and are a condition that nearly half the population will suffer from at some point in their life. it is a chronic condition and most people will tend to have more than one episode. constipation, diarrhoea, prolonged straining, hereditary factors, and pregnancy are all associated with the development of haemorrhoids.

  • enlarged/swollen blood vessels - this can lead to itching, discomfort, and irritation
  • bleeding is common and usually appears as bright red, often on the stool (not mixed in it)
  • pain, discomfort and mucous discharge

sometimes our bodies struggle with taking medicine via the mouth. suppositories are another option for when:

practical tips

avoid straining due to constipation by:
ensuring you are drinking plenty of water (8 glasses of fluid a day which approximately 2 litres).
avoiding drinking too many caffeinated drinks as this can make constipation worse.
trying to eat food which is rich in fibre (for example, fruit, vegetables, wholegrain cereals.)
ensuring you take regular exercise (for example, walking, gardening or swimming) as lack of activity can cause constipation.
keep the anal area clean and free of irritant faecal matter (for example by using moist toilet wipes)
warm baths are soothing for the peri-anal area
cold compresses may help to shrink the haemorrhoid
