Corsodyl 0.2% Alcohol-free Mouthwash is a Treatment or "Antimicrobial" mouthwash - formulation. It contains 0.2% of the active ingredient chlorhexidine digluconate.

The chlorhexidine digluconate acts rapidly by killing the bacteria that cause plaque, the main cause of gum problems/gum disease just within 30 seconds. It also forms a protective antibacterial layer over the teeth and gums to prevent plaque build up for up to 12 hours.

Regular dental check-ups are one of your best defences against gum disease. Here are some tips for maintaining healthy teeth and gums in between trips to the dentist.

While you may experience some signs of gum disease, such as swollen, red or bleeding gums, you may not be aware that you have any problems with your gums until you visit your dentist. As gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, may not be painful, often it goes undetected. It may also be missed in smokers, as smoking can suppress early symptoms.

This is why it is so important to visit your dentist for regular dental check ups, as a professional examination can spot the symptoms of gum disease even if they aren't obvious, allowing you to take steps to treat it before it gets more serious.

Gingivitis is often caused by the buildup of plaque bacteria on, around and in between teeth. If this is not removed by regular brushing it can irritate your gums and cause them to become red and swollen, to bleed and gradually recede. Eventually, your gums can become so damaged that the tooth socket is affected. This is the advanced stage of gum disease - called periodontitis, it is irreversible, and can cause tooth loss.

HOW YOU CAN HELP PUT A STOP TO GINGIVITIS

If your dentist diagnoses gingivitis you should be offered expert advice on how to treat it at home to stop it from getting worse. You may also be given professional treatments in the surgery.

The key to successful treatment is to remove and control the buildup of plaque bacteria with a good oral health routine.

Step one is brushing twice daily using the correct technique to ensure you get your teeth and gums really clean. If you're at risk from severe gum problems your dentist may suggest that you use one brush for your whole mouth, plus specialist brushes and cleaning tools for hard to reach areas. For example interdental or single tufted brushes or tooth floss to remove plaque from tricky areas, such as in between your teeth.

Step two, use a specialist toothpaste, such as Corsodyl Toothpaste, which is clinically proven to help stop bleeding gums by helping to remove plaque.

Keeping your gums and teeth healthy at home is the best way to help prevent and treat gum disease, but it should never be seen as an alternative to regular visits to see your dentist and hygienist. Side effects are minimal and include skin irritation and allergic reactions.

BEST WAY TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH

The team at Corsodyl have created a guide to the best way to brush your teeth so here are six simple steps you can take in your daily oral care routine to reduce your risk of seeing blood when you spit:

1. TWICE FOR TWO

Brushing helps remove plaque bacteria and food particles that, if allowed to build up around, on and in between your teeth, can irritate your gums and lead to problems like gingivitis. Brush for two minutes twice a day, ideally using a fluoride toothpaste like Corsodyl Toothpaste.

2. DON'T MISS ANYWHERE

Make sure you clean every corner of your mouth whenever you brush, including hard to reach areas like in between your teeth. Move methodically around your mouth, covering off the outer and inside surfaces of all your teeth (upper and lower) as well as the chewing surfaces. You can also ask your dentist about the best way to brush your teeth.

3. BE GENTLE

When it comes to teeth cleaning, harder is not better. In fact, brushing too roughly or too much, or using a worn toothbrush can wear away tooth enamel, so brush carefully. It is also recommended to replace your toothbrush every three months.

4. KNOW YOUR ANGLES

Use a circular or elliptical motion and point the toothbrush down towards the gum at a 45 degree angle. This helps clean the gum line (the area where the gum meets the tooth). For the inside surfaces of your front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and use the front part to make small, circular strokes.

5. DON'T FORGET YOUR GUM LINE

Your gum line can be susceptible to the build-up of harmful plaque bacteria. Be especially careful to brush away plaque from this area as well as from in the gaps between your teeth. Along with regular flossing or using interdental brushes, this can help you control plaque build-up.

6. AND DON'T FORGET YOUR TONGUE EITHER

Good oral hygiene isn't just about your teeth and gums. Brushing your tongue gently can also help freshen your breath and clean your mouth by removing bacteria.

HOW TO USE CORSODYL TREATMENT MOUTHWASH

The first thing to do if you think you may have a gum problem is talk to your dentist.

Corsodyl Treatment Mouthwash is an effective short term treatment for gum disease. Use according to the directions on the label.

• Please note: Toothpastes can stop the mouthwash working. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes after brushing your teeth before using the mouthwash. You can also use the mouthwash at a different time of day.

Use it twice a day.

Directions:

• Fill the cap to 10 ml line.
• Rinse mouth thoroughly for 1 minute then spit out.

Gum disease:
A one month course (600 ml) is recommended.

Mouth ulcers & oral thrush:
Continue to use it for 2 days after healing has occurred.

Denture sore mouth:
Clean & soak your dentures in the mouthwash for 15 minutes twice a day.

Dental surgery:
Rinse as directed by your dentist.

If your symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Children under 12 years of age should not use the product unless recommended by a dentist.

Do not use:

• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to chlorhexidine digluconate or any of the other ingredients.
• Anywhere other than in your mouth. Wash thoroughly if you get any in your eyes or ears.
• Immediately after brushing your teeth. See "How to use" for more information.

You can use the mouthwash if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

CAUTIONS
With prolonged use, Corsodyl treatment mouthwash may cause temporary staining of the teeth. This can normally be removed by brushing. You can reduce the risk of staining by avoiding eating or drinking dark coloured food and drinks such as tea, coffee or red wine – especially up to one hour use of the mouthwash and by twice daily brushing with toothpaste. If staining continues, it can be removed with a scale and polish from your dentist or hygienist.

Corsodyl may also cause discoloration of the tongue, but this is not permanent and disappears after treatment is stopped.
