about canesten oral capsule
canesten oral capsule is used to treat thrush in women aged between 16 and 60 years old.
canesten oral capsule contains the active ingredient fluconazole 150mg and is an effective single dose treatment for the symptoms of thrush. fluconazole belongs to the group of medicines called azoles and is an antifungal agent which fights the cause of infections such as thrush. oral preparations are particularly effective if the user is experiencing inflammation, making the use of applicators painful.
individuals tend to just look for treatments that will provide relief of the vaginal itching however, to prevent symptoms from coming back it is important to treat the internal fungal infection as well as the external effectiveness.
thrush vs cystitis
individuals usually tend to confuse their diagnosis of thrush (fungal vaginal infection) and cystitis (bacterial vaginal infection) as both conditions can have the same symptoms of pain or discomfort during urination. however, the main symptom to distinguish between the two conditions is that cystitis usually does not have a discharge.
if you are unsure about which of the two conditions you are suffering from then you seek advice from a healthcare professional.
effectiveness
canesten oral capsule is a widely used and effective thrush treatment however every patient can respond differently to medication. if you find canesten oral capsule is not effective for you, you may want to try canesten duo or another alternative.
practical tips
avoid wearing tight-fitting trousers or tights, as fungal infections are mostly caused by warm, moist environments. loose fitting, cotton underwear allows the skin to breathe more. ironing or tumble-drying the underwear may also kill any residual fungal spores.
alternatives
other treatments for thrush are available at Rightdose. these include;
- canesten thrush soft gel pessary
- canesten combi cream
- canesten internal cream
- canesten thrush combi

FAQ
What is Thrush?
Thrush is a fungal infection caused by abnormal colonisation of the vagina by a yeast called candida. The yeast normally lives in your body happily without doing you any harm. But when the natural pH balance of your vagina changes - which can easily occur - Candida can multiply. And that's when you may start to itch and develop thrush. Yeast naturally lives in everyone’s body but at times your vagina’s natural pH balance is altered and the yeast cells can begin to multiply, which leads to thrush.
Who gets Thrush?
Thrush is a very common fungal infection that women suffer from. Three-quarters of women will suffer from thrush at some point in their lives, particularly if they are pregnant or if they are under 20 years old and also around the time of menstruation.
Men can also suffer from thrush however they will only have the symptoms of a rash and itchiness. Men mostly act as a carrier of the infection, without actually presenting symptoms.
What are the symptoms of Thrush?
Itching, burning sensation vaginal discharge (white, curd-like and odourless).
Can you take Canesten Oral Capsule during pregnancy?
No. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding and think you may have thrush, please see your doctor.
When should you see your Doctor?
If you have seen no improvement after seven days since you started using Canesten Oral Capsule, you should speak to your doctor.
If you have had more than two thrush infections within six months, you should talk to your doctor regarding this.
Patients who have diabetes whose condition is poorly controlled are particularly prone to fungal infections and should seek advice from their doctor. Thrush can also be an indicator of diabetes so if you are experiencing recurrent thrush then you should seek advice from your doctor.
