Give mouth ulcers protective cover

When you have a mouth ulcer, food and drink can irritate the area and intensify the pain. That is why Iglü Gel and Iglü Rapid Relief Gel have a unique formulation specially designed with bio-adhesive technology to make them stay where they are put to protect the ulcer.

  • Both gel sticks fast over the ulcer forming a physical protective and soothing barrier that does not slide off.

For dental brace wearers, there’s non-medicated Iglü Protect Orthodontic Brace Gel which is designed to help prevent ulcers forming in the first place (and can also provide effective relief if they do occur).

What are mouth ulcers?

Mouth ulcers are painful sores inside the mouth. They can appear on the tongue and gums, or inside the cheeks and lips.

Ulcers are typically circular in shape with a yellow or white centre and a raised red rim. They are caused when the surface of the mouth's lining is removed and nerve endings are exposed – which is why they can be more painful when drinking or eating certain foods.

Mouth ulcers can occur individually or in clusters and can generally last for up to 10 days. They can be painful so speeding up the healing process, while also being provided with pain relief, can be welcome. In such cases, effective treatment is advised – like Iglü Gel, Iglü Rapid Relief Gel, Iglü Sugar Free Pastilles or Iglü Protect.

Mouth ulcers are very common: Over 20% of us will suffer from mouth ulcers at some point in our lives. You can't catch them by kissing or even by sharing drinks and utensils. That is because mouth ulcers are not caused by an infection.

What causes mouth ulcers?

There are two key types of mouth ulcer

Injury mouth ulcers
These can be caused when the mouth is burned by hot food or drinks, when you bite the inside of your mouth or when the mouth is aggravated by a toothbrush, brace, denture or a rough tooth. Forming a physical barrier over ulcers with Iglü Gels can help shield them from further harm.

Recurrent mouth ulcers
As the name suggests, these ulcers come and go. They can sometimes appear in clusters of up to half a dozen or so. Recurrent ulcers tend to be round and the size of a pencil top. Try to take care of yourself, as being stressed or run-down can trigger recurrent mouth ulcers.

In very rare cases, mouth ulcers can be confused with oral cancer
It is very important that you tell your orthodontist, dentist or doctor if you have a mouth ulcer that lasts for more than 3 weeks or keeps coming back. National guidance suggests urgent referral in the case of persistent unexplained ulcers to exclude the rare possibility of oral cancer, which can benefit from early diagnosis and treatment.

Make healthy choices
Try not to let yourself get run-down – a healthy lifestyle could make you less prone to mouth ulcers. Unfortunately though, many trigger factors are not within our control - so it's important to know how to treat mouth ulcers when we do get them.

How to prevent mouth ulcers?

Leading a healthy lifestyle can stop you from getting run-down, which can make you less prone to mouth ulcers. However, many of the factors that are known to trigger mouth ulcers, such as injury or illness, are not within your control, so it is important to know how to treat them when they occur.

How to help your mouth ulcers heal?

Help to speed up the natural healing process by:

  • Brushing your teeth carefully to avoid mechanical damage to surrounding gums and soft tissue.
  • Drinking cool drinks through a straw.
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet.
  • Using Iglü Gels.

Try to avoid:

  • Eating very spicy, salty or acidic food.
  • Eating rough, crunchy foods, such as toast or crisps.
  • Drinking very hot or acidic drinks, such as fruit juice.
  • Chewing gum.
  • Using a toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulphate (which can be an irritant).

Do Iglü Pastilles contain any nut derivatives?
None of the ingredients of Iglü Pastilles contain any nut derivatives.

Do Iglü Pastilles contain any alcohol?
Yes. One of the excipients in Iglü Pastilles is Compound Benzoin Tincture which contains ethanol.

Iglü Pastilles are sugar free, but isn't sorbitol a low-calorie sweetener?
Yes. Sorbitol is a sugar substitute, which has fewer calories than sugar.

How long can  Iglü Pastilles be used once the pack has been opened?
Iglü Pastilles can be used until the last day of the preceding month of the stated 'use-by' date printed on the carton, e.g. a use-by date of 06/2018 would be use-by 31 May 2018.

Why aren't Iglü Pastilles recommended for children under 3 years?
Children under 3 years should not use Iglü Pastilles as they are unlikely to understand how to take them. A young child is unlikely to be able to hold the pastille in their mouth and allow it to dissolve without chewing or swallowing, which may present a choking risk.

ls it best to take Iglü Pastilles before or after meals?
There are no restrictions; Iglü Pastilles can be used either before or after eating. If the condition is extensive, or severe, it may be advisable to take an Iglü Pastille immediately before (to help lessen) or after (to help soothe) any additional discomfort brought on by eating.

Can more than one pastille be used at the same time on opposite sides of the mouth?
No. Only 1 pastille should be used at a time and no more than 8 pastilles should be used in a 24 hour period.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Iglü Sugar Free Pastilles can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

On rare occasions, hypersensitivity reactions to benzalkonium chloride occur involving difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat and a rash (severe allergic reactions).

  • Stop taking this medicine and seek urgent medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Do not use it, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, our Rightdose pharmacists or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

You can help to make medicines safer by reporting any side-effects to the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard.

How to maintain healthy teeth and gums

  1. Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride. This helps to strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
  2. Change your toothbrush at least every 2-3 months.
  3. If you use mouthwash, don’t use it directly after brushing – you’ll rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste.
  4. Maintain a varied diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, fresh fruit and vegetables, as this can help to prevent gum disease.

How to care for teeth with braces

Braces can cause mouth ulcers and sores – particularly when they are first fitted and after any adjustments – because any protruding parts can rub against the lining of your mouth. However the more you care for your braces, the more comfortable they will be.

  • Brush your teeth and braces after every meal and floss once a day. Be thorough but gentle to avoid damaging the braces.
  • Avoid sticky, chewy and sugary foods. When you first get your brace, eat softer foods at first – hard ones like apples, carrots and crusty bread can break the wires and brackets.
  • Carry on playing your favourite sports etc., but make sure you wear a mouth guard, particularly for contact sports like rugby.

How to take Iglü Sugar Free Pastilles

One simple step. Put one pastille in your mouth and allow it to dissolve slowly to help fight infection and soothe discomfort.

  • Dissolve one pastille in the mouth every 2 hours.

If you take too many pastilles overdosage of the active ingredient is unlikely to occur because of the low concentrations used and the small pack size. If the dosage is grossly exceeded, sickness/nausea and vomiting may
