  • Difflam spray can be used to ease pain and reduce inflammation in viral and bacterial throat infections as well as sore throats associated with the common cold
  • Difflam Spray comes with a collapsable nozzle for easy application to the throat and mouth

It can be used to treat a variety of painful mouth and throat conditions such as:

  • Mouth ulcers
  • Sore throat
  • Sore tongue or gums
  • Pain associated with the use of dentures
  • Pain after dental work
  • Teething

Using Difflam Spray

Difflam spray comes with a collapsable nozzle for easy, direct administration to the mouth and throat.

To use the spray you should pull the nozzle out to a 90-degree angle until horizontal.
You should hold the spray upright at all times.

Before you start using it, the spray needs to be ‘primed’ - this involves pressing down on the green spray plunger until a fine spray appears. the spray should be directed away from you from whilst priming. Priming the spray only needs to be done once, on first use.

After priming, your spray is ready to use. Direct the spray to the sore part of your mouth or throat. Pressing down on the green plunger again will release one spray or ‘puff’.

After using the spray, the nozzle should be wiped clean with a tissue and collapsed. This prevents any build up and ensures your spray continues to work effectively.

How many puffs to use?

Difflam spray can be used in children aged above one, adults and the elderly. The amount of puffs appropriate depends on age:

Adults, adolescents and elderly:
-4 to 8 puffs can be used every one and a half to three hours

Children aged 6 to 12:
-Up to 4 puffs can be used every one and a half to three hours

children under 6:
-One puff for every 4 kg of body weight, up to a maximum of 4 puffs every one and a half to three hours.

Difflam spray should only be applied to the mouth or throat and not any other areas of the body.

Effectiveness

Difflam spray is thought to be effective in reducing pain and inflammation in the throat and mouth.
If you feel that difflam spray is ineffective, you may be suffering from a more severe throat infection. If this is the case you may need to be prescribed a course of antibiotics. Difflam spray can be used in combination with antibiotics.

Alternatives

An alternative to difflam spray is its generic form benzydamine spray. This contains the same active ingredient and is used in the same way. Generic versions of medicines tend to be cheaper than the branded variation.

Ultra chloraseptic anaesthetic throat spray is an alternative to difflam throat spray. this spray provides targeted pain relief through anaesthetic agent benzocaine.

If you don’t feel comfortable using a spray, lozenges are a good alternative option - tyrozets and strepsils both contain numbing and antiseptic properties. These are designed to be sucked in the mouth slowly releasing an active ingredient which helps to soothe a sore throat.
