about golden eye ointment
golden eye ointment contains the active ingredient chloramphenicol 1%, which helps kill off certain bacterial infections that can affect the eye. most commonly this is a condition called bacterial conjunctivitis. golden eye ointment is for use in children aged 2 years and over, adults and the elderly. any child under 2 years of age with an eye infection should be taken to see a doctor.

bacterial conjunctivitis
the organisms that commonly cause bacterial conjunctivitis are called ‘staphylococcus’ and ‘haemophilus influenza’.  symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis include red, itchy eyes which often produce a sticky discharge and they may also feel irritated or ‘gritty’. this sticky discharge is usually most noticeable in the morning after a nights sleep, and can often result in your eyes being 'stuck together'. you can release your eyes by bathing them in warm water.

  • Ensure you wash and dry hands thoroughly before use
  • Ensure the tube’s nozzle does not touch the eye, the skin around the eye or fingers.
  • Position the tube’s nozzle near the eye and very gently pull the lower eyelid downwards and look up.
  • By squeezing the tube gently, apply roughly 1cm of ointment to the area between the lower eyelid and eye, then close the eye for a brief moment.
