About Pholcodine Linctus

Pholcodine Linctus is an opioid cough suppressant which helps to soothe, a dry, irritating or tickly cough. Cough suppressants work by blocking your cough reflex which helps reduce the urge to cough and therefore stops the occurrence of pain in the chest. Pholcodine linctus contains the active ingredient pholcodine and can be used for individuals aged over 6 years old.

Pholcodine Linctus works by clearing away particles from the throat and lungs, which irritates the airway and makes breathing more difficult.

Pholcodine Linctus can also be used to treat a non-mucus cough, it works by reducing the pain signals to the brain which are telling the body to cough even when there is no need to.

You should not take pholcodine linctus with any other cough or cold medication, before seeking advice from a healthcare professional as many of these products contain the same active ingredients and you could potentially be taking more than your daily allowance of them, which could potentially be harmful to you. It is advised that you speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you take any other medication.

Dry Cough vs Chesty Cough

Dry coughs: no phlegm is produced. Dry coughs are also referred to as unproductive coughs. Cough suppressants that contain pholcodine, codeine or dextromethorphan can be used to treat dry/unproductive coughs.

Chesty coughs: phlegm is produced and cough reflexes will expel the phlegm.  Chesty coughs are also referred to as productive coughs. Cough expectorants that contain guaifenesin can be used to treat chesty/productive coughs.
