About Loperamide Hydrochloride Capsules
Loperamide Hydrochloride capsules are a popular choice for treatment for short-term diarrhoea and are particularly effective as they will provide effective relief of diarrhoea.

Loperamide Hydrochloride capsules are suitable for individuals over 12 years old. Loperamide Hydrochloride capsules can also be used for diarrhoea associated with IBS (previously diagnosed by a doctor and for individuals over 18 years only.)

The active ingredient Loperamide Hydrochloride 2mg reduces the duration of diarrhoea as it is an anti-motility drug. It works by reducing stool frequency and increase stool consistency. Ensuring hydration whilst suffering from diarrhoea is very important as dehydration often occurs if you do not drink enough water as your body is losing water each time you pass loose stools.

Individuals who have blood in their stools are particularly unwell or if symptoms have lasted longer than 3 days then they should seek advice from their doctor.

Practical Tips

  • If symptoms do not resolve after 3 days then seek advice from your doctor
  • Ensure good hand hygiene and regularly clean the toilet (including the seat and handle)
  • ORT (oral rehydration therapy) can be used to prevent dehydration from occurring (particularly in young or frail, elderly individuals)
  • Ensure you drink plenty of water so you do not become dehydrated
  • Eat and drink as normal, you should try to include soups and fruit juices into your diet so that it provides sufficient salt and sugar to your body, as well as foods high in carbohydrates (such as bread, pasta, rice)
  • If your job involves handling the food you will need to seek specialist advice
  • If you have any of the following then you seek medical attention as soon as you can:
    -persistent vomiting
    -blood in vomit or diarrhoea
    -drowsiness/confusion
    -dehydration concerns
