Common Cold Guide

What is a cold?

If you have a high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss of your sense of smell or taste, it could be coronavirus. Please follow the advice on coronavirus at www.nhsinform.scot

The cold is incredibly common. In fact, adults can expect to experience 2 to 3 colds every year. Children get them even more frequently.

Despite the fact that almost everyone will experience the cold at some point, there are still some myths about the proper treatment of the cold.

At Rightdose, we are here to give you the unbiased advice you need to get through your cold and feeling 100% again.

Symptoms

The range and severity of symptoms of the cold can vary from person to person. So if you have a cold, you may not experience all these symptoms, or some symptoms may be fairly mild.

The most common symptoms of the cold are:

  • Coughs
  • Sneezing
  • A blocked nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle ache
  • Fever
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Feeling of pressure in the ears

Cold symptoms usually last for a week or two. Symptoms generally last longer in children than adults.

The main myth concerning cold symptoms is the well known “feed a cold, starve a fever”. Basically this means that you should eat and drink plenty while you have a cold and fast during a fever to alleviate symptoms.

The reasons this isn’t true is that fever can be a symptom of a cold. Also, you should make sure you take in plenty of food and water during a cold and a fever. When you are sick, your body needs energy to fight off the illness.

What to do when you have a cold

If you have a cold, there is a lot you can do to help soothe your symptoms. You should not try to ‘power through’ your symptoms and continue going to work. After all, this will just risk passing the cold onto others - and may result in your symptoms lasting longer.

Instead you should:

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Keep warm
  • Take paracetamol to reduce your temperature and soothe pain

There are many other treatments you can use to alleviate your cold symptoms.
