What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that causes spots.

Most people will be affected by acne at some point, and it can cause spots on your face, back and chest.

Acne is caused when pores, blocked with dead skin and oil, become infected by bacteria

The symptoms of acne

Examples of acne include:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads 
  • Small red bumps that may feel tender or sore (papules)
  • Red spots with pus in the centre (pustules)
  • Large hard lumps (nodules)
  • Cysts

Acne treatments

Acne can be distressing, but there are a number of self-help techniques which can help – including avoiding using too much make-up, washing your hair regularly, exercising regularly and keeping hydrated. Watch our Ask the Pharmacist video on the importance of hydration.
