Overview

The health of your teeth and gums can be a good indicator of overall health. So it makes sense to keep an eye on your oral health. The condition of your mouth can give a clue to some more serious problems, including:

  • Anemia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Immunodeficiency disorders
  • Stress

Poor oral health has also been connected to an increased risk of heart disease. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy.

Promoting oral health

There are several small changes you can make to keep your mouth healthy. Brush your teeth twice a day. After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste, but don’t rinse your mouth with water. This will dilute or wash away the concentrated fluoride in any remaining toothpaste, reducing its preventative effects.

Floss between your teeth. This helps to get rid of any food and other debris that is caught between your teeth. Cut down on sugar. This will help combat tooth decay, as well as keeping the rest of your body healthy. Go to the dentist regularly. Generally, you should have a check-up with your dentist every six months.

Get children into the tooth brushing habit. Brush baby teeth as soon as they appear, and supervise younger children to ensure they brush their teeth twice a day. Follow these tips to help ensure good oral health for life.
