Illness is an ordinary part of childhood. As their immature immune system develops, your child will inevitably catch some colds, tummy bugs and infections.

As your child grows, their immune system develops and they’ll be affected by fewer diseases. Childhood illnesses are an ordinary part of childhood, but they’re generally not a reason to worry.

Baby and child health - what to expect

You should expect your child to get around five to 10 colds a year. After all, there are hundreds of viruses that cause the common cold.

If your child goes to nursery or school, they will be exposed to more of these viruses. While that may mean more days with the cold, it will mean that your child’s immune system will learn faster.

Occasional diarrhoea is also normal, especially when babies are teething or weaning. If diarrhoea lasts for more than five days or your child seems to be losing weight, this should be investigated more.

You can also expect your child to get a couple of ear infections in a year. If infections don’t respond to antibiotics or keep coming back, you should see your doctor.

When your child’s experiencing the normal illnesses that are part of childhood, there’s a lot you can do to make them feel better.

Helping your child feel better

When your kid is ill, you should ensure that they get plenty of rest and continue eating and drinking as much as possible.

The common cold can often cause fever and aches and pains. These can be soothed by using child paracetamol, which is available in a liquid or sachet form.

Ear infections generally disappear after a couple of days of antibiotics. Ensure your child gets plenty of rest, and don’t be surprised if they are grumpier than usual.
