Overview

It can be difficult if a filling breaks or a cap becomes loose. After all, it could be days before you’re able to see your dentist for a permanent repair.

In that time, the loose cap or broken filling could be uncomfortable, and can be a source of tooth decay. Food debris can easily get caught in the break, which will encourage bacteria growth.

It can also be troublesome to brush the area, as potentially exposed nerve endings will be painful. This, in turn, further encourages bacteria growth, which can lead to further tooth damage.

If you have a broken filling or loose cap, it’s very important you get it repaired as quickly as possible.

You may be able to get an appointment with your dentist immediately, but this is highly unlikely. Fortunately, there are a number of temporary dental repairs you can use until you can get to the dentist.

Using a temporary repair

Temporary dental repairs generally use the same material as you’ll find at the dentists, but can be used by virtually anyone.

To use a temporary repair:

  • Wash the affected area with warm water
  • Fill the cavity with the material
  • Bite down to ensure it’s in place
  • Remove any excess with a cotton swab

Some temporary repairs contain an applicator, which can push the filling material directly into the area. Some need to be applied by hand.

Whichever type you use, it will offer relief to the discomfort of having a broken filling or loose cap. This means you don’t need to suffer until you can get to the dentist.
